The Year of Optimism

“The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” –Winston Churchill

The idea to start this blog came to me while sitting in an airport. My husband and I were heading back to New York City after spending the holidays with my family in Atlanta, GA, and I was starting to get anxious about the looming presence of 2019. The dawn of a New Year stirs up a million memories, emotions, excitements, and anxieties–and I was feeling all of them. All at once. And quite honestly, this usually happy-go-lucky ray of sunshine was starting to feel a little…dim.

My husband and I are both actors, and at this point in our careers, our income is a mix of acting work and odd survival jobs. You have some good months, you have some not-so-good months. You have some really exciting months, you have some dull months. It’s a nasty game of chutes and ladders (metaphor cred–my father) that devastates you and at the same time ignites you in ways you never thought possible.

Sure, there have been other things that have interested me along the way in my 28 years on this planet, but acting is IT for me. Always has been, always will be. Acting is my A-number-one. The cream of the crop. The elixir of my freaking life. It is so much a part of who I am that I cannot see a life where I am not pursuing it with every ounce of energy and passion that I have inside of me. So we moved to New York City two years ago (almost to the day) and we went for it. We will continue going for it this year, but THIS year, I plan to keep a new tool in my back pocket: Eternal. Optimism. Because in a career as tumultuous as this one, why carry around anything else?

Let’s be clear, I will be keeping a FIRM grasp on reality, I will just approach difficult situations with a positive and optimistic outlook and think to myself, “What if this works out!?” rather than, “What if it doesn’t?” I will arm myself with optimism and use each new adventure as an opportunity to learn something and to grow. And I’ll keep you updated every step of the way! Have a book recommendation about optimism you want to send my way, send it! Podcast rec? SEND! Read a quote that made you feel particularly motivated? SEND SEND SEND! The more we encourage optimism in each other, the better and brighter our world becomes.

So here’s to the Year of Optimism. I can’t wait to see what it brings. 🙂
